If you want to learn Japanese, I’m here to help! I’m Nami Ichikawa (市川 奈美), a certified Japanese teacher who has been teaching since 2018. 

I currently teach for an embassy in Tokyo, a highly regarded Japanese language academy, and a major international corporation. Teaching for such renowned institutions has strengthened my skills and passion for teaching others Japanese. 

I also teach Japanese on a freelance basis. Some these students from the institutions I previously taught at continue to take online lessons with me. Because I am able to explain Japanese grammar and concepts in English as well as Japanese, I am able to help students of any Japanese level learn well. 

My specialties include instruction in daily conversation, grammar for the JLPT exam, business Japanese, kanji, and accent training. I offer lessons over Zoom or in person. In addition to providing instructions, I am happy to curate and/or create custom-made curriculum to match your study goals and interests.

My teaching philosophy

It's important to learn the basics from textbooks, but if you do only that, you'll end up memorizing unnatural Japanese that’s not always useful in real-life situations. In my lessons, I use original teaching materials that prioritize what the students learning goals―what a student wants be able to do with their Japanese, and in what situations. In this way, studies with me progress in such a way that students can easily make use of their Japanese skills in real life.
